Cicada

As soon as you pull up to the valet at Cicada in DTLA, you know you’re arriving at some place – something – special, especially if you’re not the first one there. That’s because you’ll probably see other guests milling about, checking in, being seen. More like being “scene,” because the outfits are more costume than attire, the moment more like something out of a movie than merely a night out. And that’s really the vibe here, because even if you’ve never been to Cicada, you’ve visited virtually, likely without even knowing it. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood;” “Don’t Worry Darling;” “Suicide Squad;” “Pretty Woman;” “Mad Men.” The list of films and TV shows shot here goes on and on. But when you come to visit, you’re transported back to the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 1950’s. The suits, the hats, the gowns, and yes, even real furs adorn a surprisingly diverse set of attendees, both in age and ethnicity, making this spot a true melting pot of backgrounds and generations.

My father-in-law Mike and his partner Kathy took my wife Candice and me to Cicada for the first time and we couldn’t wait to bring along some Cocktail Floats™. Just when you thought you couldn’t contribute to the most perfect Art Deco room I’ve ever seen, the ‘Floats rightfully took their places in our Martini’s, Cosmo’s, and Lemon Drops. The lights dimmed, the burlesque show began, and the floats cast a glow across our table that became the envy of the room. A party in our glasses; a party within the party at our table. The perfect accoutrement in a perfect place during a perfect evening.

Mike gave us quite the gift introducing us to Cicada. If you’ve been to Cicada, you need to go back. If you haven’t, you need to move this destination to the top of your LA list. And bring along some Cocktail Floats – some for you and your group, and maybe a few extra for the table next to yours. They’re gonna want some, and you’ll be able to spread a little cheer and share some smiles! So go ahead, dress up for Cicada – and make sure to Dress Up Your Drink with some Cocktail Floats™. What a night.
